Customer References

Contacting customer references is one of the absolute best ways for you to judge the work of a company. When it comes to customer references, companies tend to fall into one of three categories. We’ve outlined those categories below.

Category #1 – Companies With No References

Some companies don’t have a customer-reference list. Though this does not guarantee that a company is bad, we don’t usually recommend working with a company that can’t provide references. A lack of references could mean that the company is either 1) new/inexperienced, 2) performing substandard work, or 3) simply don’t care enough to measure customer satisfaction.

Category #2 – Companies With A Few (Outdated) References

Some companies that supply references haven’t updated their lists in years. This usually results in a list littered with disconnected and old phone numbers. You may have to try several numbers before you find an actual customer to talk to (frustrating!).

In addition, an outdated reference list is not a very good way to judge a company. A lot can change in just a few short years. A company that was prospering 10 years ago may not be doing as well today. Calling a homeowner who had a project performed a decade ago will not give you a true sense of how a company operates TODAY.

Category #3 – Companies With Numerous Current References

Finally, there are the companies that will give you an abundance of references from RECENT customers. These companies are few and far between, but they are out there.

We know this because we’re one of companies. We constantly update our references list. Everyone you call will have had work done by us within the past year. Keeping our references list fresh lets you know the kind of work we’re performing NOW—not 10 years ago.

Feel Uncomfortable About Calling Our Past Customers?

Don't.

You might feel slightly uneasy calling people you don’t know. But you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable at all. Every single one of our references has agreed to take calls from homeowners like you who are considering a floor or stair project. They are willing to help answer your questions—after all, they were once in your shoes!

To help you through the process (and break the ice), here are a few questions you can ask a reference:
